Why Digital Games Can Be Advantageous in Vocabulary Learning
2021
Vocabulary learning is an integral part of language learning; however, it is difficult. Although there are many techniques proposed for vocabulary learning and teaching, researchers still strive to find effective methods. Recently, digital games have shown potentials in enhancing vocabulary acquisition. A majority of studies in digital game-based vocabulary learning (DGBVL) literature investigate the effectiveness of DGBVL tasks. In other words, there are enough answers to what questions in DGBVL literature whereas why questions are rarely answered. Finding such answers help us learn more about the structure of the DGBVL tasks and their effects on vocabulary learning. Hence, to achieve this…

1986

Contextual diversity favors the learning of new words in children regardless of their comprehension skills
2021
Available online 6 November 2021 Recent research has shown the benefits of high contextual diversity, defined as the number of different contexts in which a word appears, when incidentally learning new words. These benefits have been found both in laboratory settings and in ecological settings such as the classroom during regular hours. To examine the nature of this effect in young readers aged 11–13 years, we analyzed whether these benefits are modulated by the individuals’ reading comprehension scores; that is, would better comprehenders benefit the most from contextual diversity? The manipulation of contextual diversity was done by inserting the novel words into three different contexts/…
2012
The amendment to the Polish university law provides, among other things, for the abrogation of the official list of study courses with compulsory study programs. In return, universities will be given more flexibility, with one of the priorities for the forthcoming years residing in a better adjustment of their programs to the changing needs on the labor market. In view of this and due to the fact that students’ interest in classical Germanic studies has drastically decreased in the past few years and will probably continue decreasing in the years to come, foreign Germanistics will have to break new ground. In this context, there will probably be a necessity for a stronger cooperation with r…

Izglītojošās spēles vārdu krājuma bagātināšanai angļu valodas stundās pieaugušajiem
2017
Vocabulary learning strategies employed by Finnish high school EFL students
2014
Adaptive Vocabulary Learning Environment for Late Talkers
2016
The main aim of this research is to provide children who have an early language delay with an adaptive way to train their vocabulary taking into account individuality of the learner. The suggested system is a mobile game-based learning environment which provides simple tasks where the learner chooses a picture that corresponds to a played back sound from multiple pictures presented on the screen. Our basic assumption is that the more similar the concepts (in our case, words) are, the harder the recognition task is. The system chooses the pictures to be presented on the screen by calculating the distances between the concepts in different dimensions. The distances are considered to consist o…
